The book gives special attention to the development of electric lighting technology, citing several of the author's publications in refereed journals. It explains how the various traditional lighting technologies, such as incandescent, fluorescent, and High Intensity Discharge (HID) work, and how these technologies had matured in performance and efficiency by around 1970. It then goes on to describe the very different Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, which offers signifiant performance advantages over the traditional. The book also describes, in broad terms, the science of modern devices such as lasers, fiber-optic cables, solar panels, flat panel displays, and digital imagers.
